Bruxelles, 26 marzo 2003.(Adnkronos)- La Federazione internazionale dei giornalisti, la maggiore organizzazione mondiale del genere, ha condannato oggi il bombardamento della televisione di Baghdad da parte dell'aviazione alleata, affermando che l'azione potrebbe essere considerata una violazione della Convenzione di Ginevra. Aidan White, segretario generale della Federazione, che ha sede a Bruxelles,ha detto che il bombardamento è parte della ''guerra psicologica in cui i giornalisti sono diventati vittime''. ANSA - La Federazione internazionale dei giornalisti (IFJ) ha oggi chiesto ''alle forze degli Stati Uniti e dei suoi alleati la protezione di tutti i giornalisti e del personale dei mezzi di comunicazione che seguono la guerra in Iraq''. ''La morte del cameraman australiano Paul Moran e la crescente preoccupazione'' per la sorte di tre membri dell'equipe dell'emittente britannica Itn - afferma la Fip in una nota - hanno dato luogo a ''nuovi timori circa la sicurezza dei giornalisti''. Nella guerra in corso in Iraq, ''i giornalisti, soprattutto i freelance, sono sotto una tremenda pressione e affrontano rischi molto seri'', afferma la nota della Fip, il cui segretario generale, Aidan White, sottolinea che ''deve essere garantita la sicurezza di tutti i reporter, anche di chi non si trova sotto la protezione dei militari''. ''Non è accettabile la creazione di un gruppo privilegiato di giornalisti - ha aggiunto White - mentre si ignorano invece le necessità degli altri giornalisti di tutto il mondo che stanno seguendo un conflitto a beneficio di molte centinaia di milioni di persone affamate di notizie sul conflitto''. Pat Cox, meeting with a delegation of journalists leaders from the IFJ and the National Union of Journalists in Great Britain and Ireland, said he welcomed the establishment of the International News Safety Institute in Brussels by a coalition of media organisations and press freedom groups. European leaders are meeting in emergency session in Brussels today and the IFJ has called on them to ensure that there is no excessive use of force, that civilian casualties are kept to a minimum and that humanitarian workers and media staff are protected. The IFJ has reiterated its "be safe, be professional" call to journalists and media staff working in the regions. "There are hundreds of journalists and media staff working in Iraq and around the region and they are playing a vital role in a world hungry for news about the conflict," says the IFJ. "But news people must not be targeted by either side, their safety is our paramount concern.” The IFJ estimates that at least 3,000 news gatherers are in the region, many of them freelance and not attached to major news networks. "Our message is to be safe and be professional. Journalists must not take or exposed to unacceptable risks and they must not be subject to manipulation or control by any side," says the IFJ. The IFJ has established a 24-hour news safety hot-line for journalists and media staff who run into trouble in the region.
